A380 Aborts Flight After Computer Glitch

Air France A380

An Air France A380 made a u-turn 90 minutes after takeoff from New York and landed safely at Kennedy Airport in the early hours of Saturday, after problems with its computer system.

Air France spokesman Nicolas Petteau says the A380 suffered a “minor technical problem” that caused the crew to turn the plane around for checks on the ground.

Petteau said Monday the superjumbo landed safely in New York, the problem was fixed and the plane took off again for Paris with 402 passengers on board. He says it has since crossed the Atlantic several times.

It was the second time that an A380, the world’s largest passenger plane, was forced to turn around in mid-flight due to a malfunction.

A Singapore Airlines superjumbo returned to Paris on September 27 after one of its four engines failed during a routine flight to Singapore. Airbus later said the engine trouble was a “non event” in technical terms.

The superjumbo made its maiden flight for Air France 10 days ago, taking off from Paris for New York with 538 passengers on board.

Air France is the first European airline to use the giant plane, but it made its first test flight in April 2005 and has been in service for Singapore Airlines since October 2007.

  1. Tom E. Says:

If a computer or engine probleme that is so severe that you return to the airport of origin is a “non event” in the opinion of Airbus than what?
Airbus should better not draw the curtain over all its technical problems it has with is aircraft. Instead Airbus should try to solve the big issues with the A380 before somewhat 450 Pax get killed.
