Photo Special: Palio di Siena Horse Race

Siena’s Palio is a medieval horse race and pageant, which pits the ancient districts of Siena against each other in competition for the victory banner and in honour of the Virgin Mary.
The Palio races take place twice a year on July 2 and August 16 and were started back in 1656.
These pictures are from the general practice on July 1st and the main 2009 event that took place on July 2, Piazza del Campo in Siena, Tuscany.
The race was won by Giuseppe Zedde of the Contrada of Tortoise.
