Pictures of the 2009 Bastille Day celebrations in Paris

Bastille Day is the French national holiday, celebrated on 14 July each year. Festivities are held on the morning of the 14th, on the Champs-Elysees avenue in Paris.

In this gallery of the event you’ll see French President Nicolas Sarkozy and French Army Chief of Staff Jean-Louis Georgelin drive down the Champs Elysees accompanied by French and Indian troops.

The Indian military regiment marched as guests of honour at the head of the annual Bastille Day parade

Nine Alphajets from the French Air Force’s Patrouille de France, or French Aerobatic Patrol, flew in formation over the Arc de Triomphe, trailing the colours of the French flag.

Carla Bruni-Sarkozy was also in attendance and she proved rather popular with the crowd and photographers.
