Windows 7: RC 1 Available From 5 May

Windows 7 RC 1

Microsoft’s new operating system, Windows 7, has come a step closer to completion with the news that the company is taking the product from “Beta” testing to the “Release Candidate Stage”. This is the final step before the software is released to the general public for sale.

A number of new features are introduced in the new version, which will be available free from www.microsoft.com/download from 5 May.

The programme will now allow users to log on to remote computers and stream their music via Windows Media Player. A Windows XP mode will also allow Windows 7 users to emulate Microsoft’s older XP operating system.

In a departure for Microsoft, too, the update also includes cartoonish desktop wallpapers that may alter many consumers’ initial perceptions of the company.

The new software will be free and, unlike the Beta version, there will be no cap on downloads. Microsoft is keen to emphasise, however, that “RC1” is still not a final version that it would recommend the vast majority of its 1.2 billion Windows users install immediately.

Beta and RC1 versions of Windows 7 will all expire, and users will need to pay for a final version if they wish to continue using the software.
