Apple has brought its cutting-edge, multi-touch technology to the humble mouse.

By scrolling, flicking and swiping across the smooth, pebble-like surface of the mouse, you can not only move the cursor around the screen but also quickly and easily carry out complex gestures, such as scrolling through web pages, selecting songs from iTunes and whizzing through photos.

Apple is desperately trying to come up with something new since Microsoft came out with the first optical mouse. Point is they are so smug they would look bad to simply copy Microsoft’s design (and yes I know MS didn’t invent the regular mechanical mouse btw. I’m talkinga bout the microsoft optical mouse they put out. And no I don’t care what the mouse team before MS. MS came out with it first. end of story) So in order to look original they put similar tracking tech on top of the mouse. Not really that innovative. But Apple had to do something… Proof that I’m right is Apple resisted any kind of optical mouse for ages.

The magic mouse is so unbelievably terrible; not only does it guzzle batteries like an underfed kid, but it disconnects every 5 minutes, or if you accidentally knock it against the keyboard. Can’t wait till I get a new(Different!!) mouse.

I would disagree with you B. As a graphic designer who uses the Magic Mouse hours on end day after day, I may change the battery about once a month. And there is a cutting edge technology out now called rechargeable batteries. Check them out. I leave my MacBook sitting still, moving, sleep mode, active, however it is and it never disconnects. I am not sure how you knock it off your keyboard, but I do not run my mouse across my keys, I use a mouse pad.

Point of post, the Apple magic mouse is a very wonderful product. I can see why some people do not approve, though, as it would not work well with World of Warcraft or similar hobbies. As far as music, photos, web browsing, design, and pretty much anything in contrast, I would highly recommend it.

@zing: The first optical mice weren’t invented by Mircrosoft, they were invented in the early 80s at Xerox.

Secondly, there was less than a year’s gap between Microsoft’s first optical mouse and Apple’s first optical mouse (late 90s).

@B: I’m running a graphic studio, using the Magic Mouse for up to 10 hours per-day, 7 days per-week at work AND at home. Battery life is about 1 month with rechargeable 2500mah units, and even with several Bluetooth enabled Macs, PCs and a myriad of different devices sharing the airwaves, the ONLY time a disconnect occurs is when the batteries die. And we have four Magic Mice in operation. And they all share the same excellent traits.

@hff400: Agreed… although pricey, the MM is absolutely wonderful for what it was designed for. There’s so much going for it, and of course there are also downsides and bad points.

Barely a single client who has visited and seen the mouse hasn’t made some sort of comment about the device, or even wanted to reach out and touch it.

It’s pure Apple: concise, beautiful, robust, expensive, eccentric, and most of all, abhorred by the ignorant.

i use my magic mouse for about 16 hours a day and the battery last me about 3 weeks, but i use rechargeable, best mouse i’ve ever used,
i’ve never had an issue with it disconnecting ok maybe if the mouse is in another room, i do a lot of graphic design, i have installed a 3rd party software that alouds me to use 4 finger touch and its amazing

I disagree a wireless mouse is a bit of a gimic, its totally un-nessary and the batterys keep running out on me it also wont read my rechargeable ones so its becoming expensive.
to use I find it awkward and too thin, less comfortable then a standard
Much prefer the shape and click of the older mouse or just any usb mouse.

Hah! Trackman Wheel dines on optical crepes. LogicTech forevermore!!

@hff400 well put, couldn’t agree more.
This MM is easily the best mouse I’ve used, or had a go with.
It has taken the best thing out of a trackpad, (swipes and finger gestures) and put them into an optical mouse, couldn’t be easier to use.
