Internet Explorer 8 Charity Push

Even as Microsoft pulls the latest version of their browser from Europe, they’ve started a massive publicity drive in the America. Notably, they’ve created several viral videos starring Dean Cain, star of the much loved 90s TV show, ‘The New Adventures of Superman’. To Microsoft’s credit, the videos are actually pretty good and above the quality of what corporate marketing teams usually manage in a field dominated by far more entertaining user generate content.

But what’s even better than viral marketing to big up your software? Charity. For everyone who downloads IE 8 from their new site ‘Browser for the Better’, Microsoft is donating meals to a food bank. Microsoft announced this with a selection of artists who built the empire state building and the Golden Gate Bridge out of food cans in the respective cities. Technically, what the software company are actually doing is donating $1.15 dollars for every download up to a total of $1m.

So essentially, you can give to charity – albeit, an American charity rather than something international – just by downloading IE8. You don’t have to use the browser; you can just download it and then delete it, although we’re sure that’s not exactly what Microsoft is after.

Microsoft needs the publicity at any rate – usage of the Internet Explorer has fallen over the last few months while usage of its main competitor Firefox continues to rise. Currently, IE is used by around 65 per cent of internet users globally, compared to 22 per cent for Firefox.
