Google Chrome 2.0 Released

Google released their Chrome browser some time ago as an alternative to all of the heavyweight, feature filled browsers available on the net. It had quite a large amount of PR coverage when released and indeed, it did some things very well and it was an incredibly stable piece of software. Many people thought that it was a little bit too light on features though and Chrome users only take up about a 1% share of the web browser market.
Today though, we’ve seen the first major change in Chrome since its release. It’s called Chrome 2.0 and ands a few features and fixes that many people felt were lacking. The browsing speed – which was already excellent – has been increased by over 25%, but that’s not all. Chrome also has a number of new features. It’s hard to be too excited by them since they are things we’ve seen in other browsers for years, such as F11 full screen mode and form auto fill.
However, seeing Chrome begin to add some of the functionality of the bigger names like Firefox and IE is great, and hopefully Google will continue to add even more updates. There’s the danger that at some point they’ll add too much, but for now there are still some much needed ease-of-use style additions that Google needs to focus on to make Chrome a serious contender for people’s main browser.
If you’re thinking that these features might not be enough to warrant calling the browser ‘2.0’, Google have stated they aren’t holding much stock in the idea of their version numbers and will simply update the browser as quickly as possible while keeping it stable. Chrome is shaping up to look like a really good browser, even if doesn’t have all the features people are demanding yet.
