This week in Tech, Vol. II

Dell Adamo XPS Laptop
I’ve figured out why it’s called Black Friday – the sales start at 4 am, in the black of the morning.

1. Dell just loosed it’s slimmest laptop ever on the unsuspecting public, featuring a radical design that has the keyboard open automatically with the swipe of a finger. The laptop comes in a hair under 10 millimeters thick, with the base configuration sporting Windows 7, a 1.4GHz Core 2 Duo CPU, a 128GB solid state drive, 13.4-inch WLED panel, 2 megapixel web cam, 4GB of memory, integrated graphics, WiFi and a USB Ethernet adapter. This thing just screams sexy. Dell Adamo XPS Laptop

2. Because real paper sucks, Qualcomm’s gone ahead and done what everyone’s been hoping for since reading Harry Potter – made a color ebook display that plays video. They must be sorcerers or something. The new tech features XGA resolution (1024×768), full color and video, and only a small impact on battery life. 3. Google continues to try and one-up the competition, this time with Google Chrome OS. Announced this week, the operating system won’t ship till next year, but it has already generated a lot of buzz. Centering around the web browser as the real reason anyone uses a computer – a slap in the face for Mine Sweeper – the OS will have the look of the current Chrome browser, presenting a new interface for the next generation of netbooks. Microsoft, you’re on notice; time to step up your game. Google’s Chrome OS revealed — with video!

4. Jeeze, all of a sudden reading is cool again! The New York times reports that Barnes & Nobles has sold out it’s initial allotment of Nook e-readers, with pre-orders exceeding expectations. Much excitement has been following this phenomenon, as others like Sony have stepped in to vie for the precious “book reading” market segment that Amazon’s Kindle sparked a year ago. 5. My, what a smart phone you are! Featuring Nokia’s next-gen mobile operating system, Maemo, the N900 launched this week, positioned as one of the most advanced devices on the market. Touting a desktop-like web browsing experience, an open source platform, and 3G connectivity, the N900 will quickly find itself on many a wish list. Features include a 3.5-inch touchscreen, 32GB of storage, full QWERTY keyboard, and a powerful 5.0 megapixel camera. Too bad it doesn’t make coffee.
