Amazon today slashed the price of its top music downloads to as little as 29p in a major price war with rival Apple.

The online retail giant is vying for a piece of the download market by offering hit tracks such as Lady GaGa’s Poker Face for 50p less than Apple.

Amazon has made more than 100 songs available for 29p including Lily Allen’s The Fear as well as several rock, classical and jazz tracks.

Amazon.co.uk has also been offering albums for as little as £3 in good news for cash-tight music fans.

Experts said the promotion was likely to spark an online war with most downloads in Britain selling for between 59p and 79p.

Apple currently has more than 70 per cent of the download market, and has sold more than six billion songs globally.
