Consumer Electronics Show In Las Vegas

A selection of gadgets from the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas that caught my eye for a mixture of reasons, some good, some bad.

Hanvon Touchpad

A Hanvon Touchpad, an Intel Atom-based Windows 7 tablet PC.

The unit has a 10.1″ screen, e-Book content and includes handwriting recognition software in different languages. It is expected to be available in March 2010, for about $700.

Sony Daily Edition E-reader

The Sony ‘Daily Edition’ E-reader. The reader, retailing for $399, has 3G wireless access and a touch screen that allows the reader to make notes.

Samsung Moment

The Samsung Moment phone that features mobile digital television. The phone works with Google Android and uses a receiver built in to get TV signals from the surrounding area.

Dont Text and Drive Simulator

A man texts on his mobile phone while driving in a simulator at the LG booth. The LG ‘Don’t Text and Drive Simulator’ determined that texting while driving made his driving nine times more risky.

Light Touch pico projector

The Light Touch from Light Blue Optics can beam a virtual computer on to any flat surface, allowing users to tap away as though on a proper keyboard. It’s not commercially available – the Cambridge-based company is hoping to license the technology to other manufacturers.

Polar Bear television

Hannspree is well-known for its novelty televisions – it famously makes one shaped like a red, shiny apple – but the polar bear television has raised eyebrows at the show. Aimed at children, the fluffy, cuddly TV has a 19in screen. But the real irony, of course, is that power-hungry televisions – and consumers’ unsatiable appetite for the latest models – is helping to contribute to global warming, which, as we all know, is very bad news for polar bears.

Swiss Army penknife

Victorinox, the company which has allowed generations of boys to have a tooth pick, screwdriver, scissors and bottle opener in their pocket at all times, has now added a garage door opener to the Swiss Army penknife.

Disney themed Asus netbook

A 9.8″ Asus MK90H with a Disney themed Netpal netbook.
