Judge Dredd Weapon Tested by US Army
There’s always something new being prototyped by the US military – we’ve had mind reading and ‘Halo’ style combat suits so far in the last few years. What’s next? A hand held weapon that can fire on enemies around corners and trenches, even if they can’t be seen in the holders line of sight.
The XM-25 Individual Air Burst Weapon or ‘Judge Dredd Gun’ as it has been nicknamed by many experts uses a range finding laser to determine distance and then fires a timed projectile set to explode exactly where it should, rather than the rather random results generated by using hand-thrown grenades.
The gun can fire up to a range of 750 meters and is ideal for use in middle eastern combat where small groups of enemies often use terrain like caves and rocks to their advantage. The gun can also fire normal shots using a range of rounds, including non-lethal and armour-piercing ammunition so it’s a very versatile weapon.
The usefulness of the gun, it’s application and eventual roll-out should be seen after the tests have completed. The US Army has high hopes for the weapon believing it could be used instead of Air Force attacks on difficult to attack targets saving the US armed forces millions of dollars in ‘overkill’ maneuvers
