Red Wings Are Halfway There

The Detroit Red Wings claimed a 3-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday night to open a 2-0 advantage in the best-of-seven Stanley Cup final.

Evgeni Malkin scored on a power play in the first period to give the visiting Penguins the lead at Joe Louis Arena.

But Detroit duo Jonathan Ericsson and Valtteri Filppula both scored in the second period to turn the contest around.

Ericsson, who had his appendix removed just four days earlier, found the net with a slap shot after Darren Helm won a face-off in the left circle.

And Filppula put the Red Wings in front six minutes later when he followed in Marian Hossa’s shot, backhanding the rebound past Pittsburgh netminder Marc-Andre Fleury.

Rookie Justin Abdelkader added a third goal early in the final period, exactly as he had done in Detroit’s win by the same scoreline in the series opener a day earlier.
