Walter Smith Threatens To Quit Rangers

Rangers boss Walter Smith has told the board, give me money for new players or I’m off.

The Ibrox gaffer has watched two transfer windows open and close without being able to buy a player, and is now reluctant to continue without investment in new personnel.

Smith and his assistants, Ally McCoist and Kenny McDowall, are all out of contract in January but when asked if he wanted to keep the manager in place the new chairman Alastair Johnston was emphatic. “I want to give them new contracts,” he replied.

So what’s Walter’s story? Why speak out the day before an important match knowing it will be back page news leading into the game?

Is this him speaking out before they take on Spanish side Sevilla tonight in the Champions League so his arse is covered when they get gubbed?

The after match press conference could go a little something like this…

Journo: “Walter, five nil was a heavy defeat, what’s your thoughts on the match?”
Walter: “We haven’t signed any new players in over a year, how can we compete at this level without adding and improving to the squad?”

The fans are on old Watty’s side and the pressure and spotlight are then turned on the board and new chairman.

Let’s not forget, Walter has been in this business forty odd years and has a lot of friends in the Scottish media, he knows exactly what he’s doing.
