Shakhtar Donetsk Win 2009 UEFA Cup

Shakhtar Donetsk

Shakhtar Donetsk have become the last ever winners of the UEFA Cup. They beat German side Werder Bremen 2-1 after extra time.

Next season the competition will become the Europa league, it will be structured along the same lines as the Champions League.

The 38th and last UEFA Cup final was held at the Sukru Saracoglu stadium in Istanbul, and the Ukrainian side showed early on their intentions, striker Luiz Adriano going close in the 6th minute.

Midway through the half – he had a goal. Full back Razvan Rat played a long ball through and the Bremen defenders allowed it to run to Luiz Adriano, who lifted the ball over the onrushing keeper Tim Wiese.

The German side were soon back in the game. Ten minutes before half-time they drew level when Naldo’s thumping 30-yard free-kick was tamely palmed into the net by Ukraine international goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov.

In extra time, Shakhtar struck early. Captain Dario Srna crossed from the right and Jadson’s shot sneaked past Wiese.

They held out over the last 25 minutes – as Pizarro was twice denied.

All in all in wasn’t the best game I’ve watched and in my opinion the best team on the night won the trophy.
