Nine Man Rangers Lift CIS Cup

Kenny Miller completed a personal Treble of trophies since his return to Rangers and kept Walter Smith on course for a domestic clean-sweep following an astonishing Co-operative Insurance Cup Final triumph.

The favourites were down to nine men when Miller snatched the winner — after two second-half flashpoints saw referee Craig Thomson flash red cards at Kevin Thomson and Danny Wilson.

And if that stunning header shattered St Mirren’s dream of repeating their 1987 Hampden glory day, it must also have shattered a few conspiracy theories regarding the Ibrox side and SFA match officials.

Rangers midfielder Thomson fully deserved his dismissal for a shocking challenge on his St Mirren namesake, Steven Thomson, while teenager Wilson tugged back Saints substitute Craig Dargo just outside the box and was ruled to have stopped a clear goalscoring opportunity.

Those dismissals could, and probably should have sounded the death knell of the Ibrox side’s dreamed-of Treble, but if anyone harboured any doubts about the resilience and resolve resident within this Rangers team, they have not been paying attention for 12 months.

Smith’s side have lost just one domestic game in 53 weeks and the nine men who triumphed at Hampden yesterday will now enter Ibrox folklore alongside some of their more feted predecessors
