In Pictures: Eight Famous Football Moments

England 1977 – The Tartan Army invade, and wreck, the pitch at Wembley after Scotland beat England 2-1.

Mexico 1986 – Diego Maradona became a national hero in Argentina (and Scotland) when he scored with his hand to beat England in the quarter-finals of the 1986 World Cup. He went on to lift the trophy.

Germany 2006 – During the World Cup final between France and Italy, Zinedine Zidane shocked the world when out of nowhere he headbutted Italy’s Marco Materazzi. What ‘The Matrix’ actually said will only ever be know by him and ‘Zizou’.

England 1999 – Robbie Fowler celebrates his goal against Liverpool’s Merseyside rivals, Everton, by using the white line of the penalty area to simulate snorting a line of cocaine. It cost him £60k and a four-match suspension.

England 1987 – Wimbledon hard man Vinnie Jones takes matters into his own hands by squeezing Paul Gascoigne’s nuts.

England 1995 – After being red carded Eric Cantona launched a ‘kung-fu’ style kick into the crowd, directed at a Crystal Palace fan who had shouted abuse at him. The fan got a week in the jail and Cantona got community service.

Sweden 1989 – Defender Terry Butcher looks as if he’s been in the ring and not at the heart of England’s back line after a cut to his head leaves him a bloody mess.

Italy 1990 – England midfielder Paul Gascoigne stands bubbling like a five year old on the pitch after picking up a booking in the semi-final against West Germany which would have ruled him out of the final had his side made it. (They didn’t make the final after losing on penalties)
