Barcelona Lose First Game Of The Season

Barcelona

Barcelona did not just lose their first match in La Liga yesterday at the Vicente Calderon, but also their attacking engine in Xavi Hernandez.

Pep Guardiola’s men failed to re-establish their five-point lead at the top of the Primera Division after slumping to a 2-1 defeat at Copa del Rey finalists Atletico Madrid.

Barca were second best for long periods against an Atletico side who established a 2-0 lead inside 23 minutes thanks to a clinical Diego Forlan strike and a wonderful free-kick from Simao Sabrosa.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic halved the deficit within four minutes but Atletico deservedly held on to secure an impressive win and do city rivals Real Madrid a huge favour in the title race.

Xavi is out for two weeks and will join Seydou Keita, who is out for a month with a muscle tear, Eric Abidal (two months), Yaya Toure (two weeks), Dani Alves (three weeks) and Dmytro Chygrynskiy (one week) on the growing Barca injury list.
