Adebayor: Nothing to celebrate…

On the playground the mantra to beat the verbals from that nasty school bully was “sticks and stones will break my bones but names will never hurt me” On the football field, ask Emmanuel Adebayor whether the same mantra rings true. Maybe not.
The week’s back pages have been dominated by the 25 year old striker’s stamp on Van Persie and by ‘that’ goal celebration when after scoring City’s third goal in a 4-2 romp, Adebayor ran the length of the pitch and then slid on his knees in front of the stand containing the visiting Arsenal support. Provoking them. Inciting them. And causing a right old fall out which could have fallen alot further, especially in the wake of the trouble at the recent West ham v Millwall game. Luckily the Arsenal end’s anger didn’t spill out onto the pitch and this was mainly due to the management and hard work of the stewards.
Adebayor’s excuse?
“The emotion took over me . It was silly to run up in front of the Arsenal fans but these people have been insulting me all game. Even in the warm-up they were insulting me. They were saying things that are not nice to hear, personal things.”
And so, and like Cantona before him, the playground bully bated him and he reacted. Silly. Very silly.
He has since apologised but that hasn’t stopped the FA charging him with improper conduct, a charge staggeringly Mark Hughes has stated today that he’ll contest.
“He didn’t leave the field of the play. He laid on his knees – it was his normal celebration,” said Hughes.
A normal celebration to run 90 yards and take the proverbial out of a previously adoring punter? Oh dear. It seems money can buy you happiness and ignorance at City. A coach load of it…
