In Pictures: 2010 Dubai Marathon

The 26 mile race set off at 6.30am along the Emirate’s Jumeirah Beach Road yesterday with 12,000 entrants taking part in the 2010 Dubai Marathon.

As the sun started to rise and the chill in the air gradually disappeared, two time world champion Haile Gebrselassie pulled ahead in the leading pack.

At the finishing line a huge crowd of fans had gathered, waiting to see if their Ethiopian hero would manage to smash the world record and collect the $1 million cash prize. He did cross the line first but failed by a little over two minutes to break the world record. He finished in 2hr 6min 9sec, while the record time is 2hr 3min 59sec.

The winner of the women’s race, Mamitu Deska Molisa, sprinted to the finishing line as the clock hit 2:24:18, before falling to the ground, exhausted and unable to keep down fluids. Medics carried her away on a stretcher, but she was well enough to accept her trophy.
