WTF? Ice Cream Burgers

Burgers usually come with meat and salad, but a new item on the menu at a Bay of Islands ice cream shop is offering something different.

Ice cream burgers were put on the summer menu at Cellini’s in Russell in October.

Store manager Aom Sittithavron said the treats were slowly taking off with customers.

They are more like a dessert pie than a burger, with a scoop of any flavour of ice cream or frozen yoghurt placed between two sweet buns which are toasted on a grill to seal the edges.

“It’s warm on the outside and cold on the inside,” Miss Sittithavron said. “I love it.”

The “burgers” are then dusted with icing sugar and topped with a sweet sauce.

The idea came to the store’s owners at a hospitality trade show in Auckland this year.

In the interests of science the Herald’s reporter tasted the burger, which was a bit like apple pie without the apple. The top tip, though, is to eat quickly before the icecream melts.

I had an ice cream burger when I visited Russel. It was mindblowing. But more mindblowing was that it is not a regular treat available form every street corner.

I cannot find one anywhere and think that maybe a business opportunity is in the offing.
