20 Scary Looking Vintage Surgical Instruments

This gallery of surgical instruments dating back to the 16th century, through until the early nineteen hundreds, goes a long way to explaining the fatality rate on the operating table.

Some of these surgical tools were used for ritual circumcision, hemorrhoids and uterine or ovarian tumor removal, a tobacco enema, tonsil extraction and of course, all those knives and saws were used for amputations.

Just looking at them is enough to make you squirm and be thankful for modern medical care.
