Plot: Set in Harlem in 1987, it is the story of Claireece Precious Jones (Sidibe), a sixteen-year-old African-American girl born into a life no one would want.

Precious gets kicked out of school after falling pregnant for the second time by her abusive father. Terrified of being stuck at home looking after her violent mother (Mo’Nique) for the rest of her life, Precious takes her former headmaster’s advice and secretly joins a ‘last-chance’ school for troublesome girls.

There she befriends teacher Blu Rain (Patton), who helps her find her feet after giving birth. But just as she’s getting her life together, Precious learns some devastating news that brings her new world crashing down around her.

Verdict: Precious is a powerful and gripping adaptation that will leave you feeling winded but wiser. This is very likely to sweep the boards in awards season – especially Mo’Nique for her supporting role.
