At The Movies: Brothers

Plot: A happy family is torn apart when Captain Sam Cahill (Maguire) goes missing while on duty in Afghanistan. When he is presumed dead, it’s a wake-up call for his rebellious brother Tommy (Gyllenhaal), who steps up and looks after Sam’s wife (Portman) and children.

This is a moving and gripping drama that explores love, loss and heartbreaking dilemmas, with terrific performances all round. Golden Globe-nominated Tobey Maguire is brilliant as the officer who goes from local hero to a shadow of his former self, while Jake Gyllenhaal is very believable as his ex-convict brother.

Verdict: A saddening but rewarding drama, this has no easy answers but delivers excellent performances from its starry cast.

Date Movie: Not for a first date, maybe a second or third – maybe.
