Disney Face UK Cinema Boycott Of Alice In Wonderland

Alice in Wonderland 2010

Three of the UK’s biggest cinema chains are threatening to boycott Alice in Wonderland because of a dispute with makers Disney over the time in which the film is available exclusively to cinema.

Odeon, Vue and Cineworld have said that they will refuse to show the film if Disney insists on reducing the interval between cinema and DVD release from the usual 17 weeks to 12.

Distributors want to bring out DVDs more quickly as they believe DVD sales will increase if the window is shorter, because the promotion will be fresher in people’s minds.

Cinema chains want to maintain the 17-week standard, to make as much money out of a film as possible.

Odeon, Vue and Cineworld own 60 per cent of British cinema screens, and more than 90 per cent of 3-D screens
