Leaders of the Red Shirt anti-government protest promised Monday to that they will take one thousand litres of blood donated by protesters and spill it around Government House on Tuesday, in retaliation for the government’s decision not to dissolve the current ruling Government.

The bloody threat was made shortly after Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva rejected an ultimatum issued by the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) that he resign, dissolve parliament and call new elections.

The UDD has drawn an estimated 100,000 provincial supporters to Bangkok in an effort to topple Abhisit’s so-called ‘elitist’ government, and pave the way for a political comeback for ousted former premier Thaksin Shinawatra.

The demonstrations have so far been non-violent unlike the unrest that gripped the city in April 2009.

Bangkok and seven surrounding provinces have been placed under the Internal Security Act between March 11-23, empowering authorities to prohibit protests in sensitive areas and arrest perpetrators of violence for up to a year.

The authorities had 35,000 police and soldiers on hand in Bangkok with another 8,000 soldiers brought into the capital Sunday night, according to the Bangkok Post.
