In Pictures: Life In Pripyat Today

This set of pictures taken by Alessa White earlier this year in and around the abandoned town of Pripyat that sits just 14.5Km from the ill fated Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant shows signs of life despite the radioactive poisoning that experts believe will take hundreds, if not thousands, of years to disperse.
The Zone of Alienation is considered relatively safe to visit with radiation levels having dropped considerably, compared to the fatal levels of April 1986 due to the decay of the short-lived isotopes released during the accident. Most places within Pripyat, the level of radiation does not exceed equivalent dose of 1 μSv (one microsievert) per hour.
Several reports suggest that wildlife has flourished due to significant reduction of human impact. Populations of wolves, wild boar, red deer, moose, and beaver have multiplied enormously in recent times and as you’ll see from the pictures there is plenty of vegetation. Even a stray puppy.
