Mudslides in China

Entire communities in China’s northwestern Gansu province were swallowed when the debris choked Bailong River burst its banks over the weekend, releasing wave after wave of muddy water through the Zhouqu district.

While torrential rains were the direct cause, tree cutting that left the dry hills exposed was seen as contributing factor.

Local officials were cited as saying at least 627 people were still missing with around 1,100 deaths confirmed.
