Chile Miners Rescue

Families cried, cheered and hugged as 31 year old Chilean miner Florencio Avalos took his first breath of fresh air for more than nine weeks.

Florencio was the first miner to emerge after being trapped for 69 days in the San Jose copper mine in the Atacama Desert. No one in history has been trapped so long and survived.

At the time of writing five of the 33 Chilean miners have been raised successfully to the surface in a rescue operation that appeared to be running like clockwork.

This story will be ongoing all day, so for now I’ll leave you with this first batch of images as I’m sure there will be plenty more to come.
