Massive Earthquake Hits Chile, Triggers Tsunami Fears

A massive earthquake with a magnitude of 8.8 has struck Chile, killing at least 85 people and triggering a tsunami.

The tremor shook the capital, Santiago, for a minute and a half early this morning, bringing down telephone and power lines.

Many people left their homes after the earthquake, fearing that the many aftershocks could topple damaged buildings.

The earthquake is the worst to strike Chile in 50 years. Tsunami warnings were issued for Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, Central America and Pacific Island nations.
