Photo Special: Cambodian “Karaoke” Girls
Siem Reap, Cambodia is where young women from rural areas of the country head in the hope of finding work to support their famillies back home in the village.
Many who come to the big city take up work as ‘karaoke girls’ earning around $40 USD a month and are usually between the ages of 17 and 25.
Their main clients are Khemer people and some foreigners. They pay $1 for a beer and $2 for ‘karaoke girls’ to sing romantic songs. As you’d suspect many are willing to go further than sing songs to make money and charge around $15 for short time sex in an upstairs room.
Many karaoke girls’ families think they are working in the city in a factory or office totally unaware of how the money they send home every month is earned.
Of course they do have choices much like their sisters working the red light areas of Bangkok. Don’t be fooled by western media feeding you one liners that they are all forced into this industry. Many choose do it knowing exactly what they are doing and are certainly not under pressure to take this career path although many will be faced with limited choices.
