Inside Colombia’s Bellavista Prison (16 Photos)

Bellavista prison is located in the home town of the infamous drug lord Pablo Escobar, the city of MedellÃn, Colombia.
Prisoners with money live very different lives than those without.
Inmates can own or rent a cell with it’s own lock and set of keys. Which makes sense in one of the most violent prisons in the world that is home to guerrillas, assassins, drug dealers and petty criminals.
Until recently the maximum sentence in Colombia was 40 years when this was increased to 60 years being the longest term any inmate can serve. The average sentence at Bellavista is 30 years.
Nicknamed “bongo” by the inmates, food is served three times a day and usually includes rice, soup, potatoes, and processed meat. It is cooked by prisoners who live in cells within the main kitchen facility.
Intimidating doesn’t even begin to describe life inside Bellavista Prison.
