Bus operator Stagecoach began a trial of the ‘amfibus’ last week in Glasgow, Scotland after the local transport organisation announced it was scrapping the 500 year old ferry service between Yoker and Renfrew this March.

The £700,000 Dutch-built bus can carry 45 passengers and will run by road from the near-by Braehead shooping centre then switch to twin water jets as it runs down the slipway into the River Clyde at Renfrew.

The vehicle will re-emerge at Yoker before completing its journey to Clydebank.

Stagecoach is working on a system for disabled access and it hopes to encourage cyclists to stay with the crossing using racks at the back to carry bicycles.
