Abandoned Beach Resort Of Varosha, Cyprus (52 Pics)

During its heyday in the early seventies, the Varosha quarter of Famagusta in Cyprus was one of the most popular holiday destinations in the world. Favoured by the wealthy, it welcomed stars such as Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Raquel Welch and Brigitte Bardot.
However in August 1974 the millionaires playground became just one of the many casualties from the as-yet-unresolved-war which tore Cyprus in half and left it divided between north and south.
As the Turkish army approached, in response to a Greek-backed coup, the inhabitants fled never to return.
Once the Turks gained control of the area, they fenced it off and have since refused admittance to anyone except Turkish military and United Nations personnel leaving Varosha as a decaying, crumbling ghost town.

So sad yet intriguing as to why we cannot resolve this and learn to live in tolerance if not harmony. Prayers for the souls who lost their home and community.
